For some reason I thought you were in New England, not the coal region.

Centralia, PA?

Is this Gold Mine road?

No, the spray painted road is an abandoned stretch of highway near Centralia. If you're unfamiliar with the town, there's an underground coal mine fire that's been burning for decades. The town was abandoned and the highway was rerouted. I hit it up on the way back from Gold Mine Road.

Ah yes, I thought it might have had something to do with that town but I forgot the name.

It’s an interesting place. The town grid is still there with sidewalks and streetlights but it’s all woods now.

Yep! several miles of double and single track available for exploration, in addition to the abandoned highway.

Yeah, I went yesterday. Only one other person was on the graffiti highway when I did a lap on it.

My uncle goes up there to ride from time to time. He’s invited me up but I’ve never been able to go.

Nice. It was stupidly crowded on Saturday. Tons of teenagers rolling around on dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, and Jeeps with no doors. And the whole place kind of smelled like weed.

Yeah it can get very crowded on weekends. That’s why I try to make trips up there during the week. Much more peaceful.

I need to write it up, but I was out towards Harrisburg checking out a fun road. Gold mine road and PA 125. Fantastic driving.

I will have to check this out on the FJR. Thanks!

Set your GPS for Swatara State Forest (trout run trail?) end in Shamokin, add a stop in tower city to make sure it goes the right way. Up and down like 4 mountain ridges. Gold mine road and pa 125 are called the tail of the dragon of PA.
